Home Before Dark: Book Review
By Danielle Rose
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
In the latest thriller from New York Times bestseller Riley Sager, a woman returns to the house made famous by her father’s bestselling horror memoir. Is the place really haunted by evil forces, as her father claimed? Or are there more earthbound—and dangerous—secrets hidden within its walls?
Home Before Dark follows Maggie Holt, daughter of Ewan Holt, the author behind a bestselling memoir chronicling the Holt family's 20-day stay at the infamous and allegedly haunted Baneberry Hall. Too young to remember the events that took place, Maggie Holt has been seeking answers regarding her family's ghostly encounters since she was a child. After the unfortunate death of her father, Maggie inherits the crumbling Victorian manor and sets out to renovate the property for sale.
While there, Maggie experiences uncanny events, supporting her father's claim that an ominous presence shrouds Baneberry in darkness. She sets out to finally answer all the questions her parents refused to acknowledge over the years, and this time, Maggie discovers what really happened when the Holt family fled in the dead of night, abandoning the property, and all its devastation, for good.
Equal parts unsettling and breathtaking, Home Before Dark is a stellar example of the perfect thrilling read. I was left on edge, reading into the late hours, unable to stop until I had the same answers Maggie sought.
Told in dual point of view, Home Before Dark is two books in one—a real treat for bibliophiles. Sager provides chapters from House of Horrors, the memoir Ewan Holt wrote about his time at Baneberry Hall. We also have present-day chapters, where we follow Maggie Holt's attempted restoration of the manor. The dual timelines make for an eerie, chilling, and downright spooky read.
Riley Sager is the master of suspense writing. His stories are immersive and enthralling, keeping readers on the edge of their seats and pondering his stories long after the pages have turned. Due to his impeccable writing, Home Before Dark is Sager's best novel to date, and I absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in thrillers or suspense tainted by the paranormal.
